Low-alloy steels such as 8620 or 4130, contain specified amounts of chromium, nickel or molybdenum to the carbon to enhance hardenability and toughness. Low-alloy steels are most commonly used for components in the oil and gas, and pump and valve industries, but are also suitable for military vehicles and earthmoving and construction equipment.
Common Alloying Elements to Carbon Steel
Nickel (Ni) – Added to steel to provide strength, stability and toughness – corrosion resistance
Chromium (Cr) – Added to steel to increase hardenability and strength – wear and corrosion resistance
Molybdenum (Mo) – Added to steel to increase hardenability and strength – withstands elevated temperatures
